Janessa Clark (Founder, Owner & Head Instructor) is a German-born New Yorker currently based in Stockholm. She holds an MA (Honors with Distinction) in Performance Practices and Research from London's Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in addition to a BFA (magna cum laude) in Choreography from Arizona State University's Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts. Janessa developed a passion for Pilates in 2001 in New York City while pursuing her career as a professional dancer and choreographer. She found that Pilates was the only system of movement that kept her painful lower back injuries under control. Janessa also began to notice a significant improvement in her overall strength, flexibility, and control while performing.
In 2005, Janessa became a certified Pilates Mat instructor through Steele Pilates/Teri Lee Steele (The Kane School Lineage) in New York City. Janessa was also a supervisor for the Steele Pilates Mat Certification Program from 2006-2011 and completed her Steele Pilates Cadillac/Reformer Certification in 2011 before moving to London. While living in London, Janessa went on to formally create the Pilates by Janessa brand so that she could interweave all aspects of her practice under one name and offer deeper training, through a variety of formats, to her global clientele. Janessa holds a comprehensive certification through BASI Pilates® and is a Pilates Method Alliance (PMA) member.
Always eager for knowledge, Janessa has completed courses for Pilates with Stability Balls, Foam Rollers and Small Props, Pre/Post-Natal Pilates, Back/Hip Pathologies, Pilates for Scoliosis, and Pilates for Special & Aging Populations. She also holds two Barre Fitness Certifications. Most recently Janessa has become a Core Consultant through the Bloom Method in Boulder, Colorado.
In 2014, the Pilates by Janessa brand become so popular that Janessa was able to finally realize her long-term goal of opening a Pilates studio in Stockholm. Since opening the studio Janessa has developed robust programming featuring open classes, private training, pre/postnatal courses, boot camps, retreats and detoxes. In 2015, the studio launched into teacher education by offering the first-ever BASI Pilates® Mat Teacher Training Program in Sweden. The studio is now the official Teacher Training Center in Sweden for BASI Pilates® International. Janessa and the Pilates by Janessa brand continue to develop by welcoming in new instructors, maintaining a presence at international conferences, and branching out into international workshop education. Janessa is also a birth doula in training.
Julia Liedbergius (Interim Studio Manager & Pilates/Barre Fitness Instructor) is a classically trained Pilates instructor with a contemporary outlook on the method. Julia, a native Swede, has spent the last 11 years abroad pursing a dance and Pilates career. She found Pilates as a dancer but made the decision to make it her profession in as it helped her rehabilitate from foot injuries and operations.
She holds a comprehensive certificate from Move Academia de Pilates de Argentina as well as a certificate for Pilates for Injuries and Pathologies through BASI Pilates and a Pre/Post-natal certificate. She strives to challenge her students on their own level as well as helping them to understand the power of movement. She also hopes to share how to use Pilates as a tool in daily life; connecting body, mind and soul (and of course, by bringing joy to the practice). She teaches in English, Swedish and Spanish.
Ai Hiroshoma Hjelm (Yoga Instructor) is originally from Tokyo and began her journey of yoga when she moved to Stockholm 9 years ago. With a background in modern ballet, it was a natural progression to practice Vinyasa Yoga, and delve deeper into the rhythm of the breath for her. Ai is a RYT 200 certified Vinyasa yoga teacher by Yoga Alliance. She is also a certified teacher for Shiva Rea's Yoga Trance Dance®. Currently she is deepening her practice for RYT 500 with Shiva Rea and Shiva's PRANA FLOW®.
Karla Garay (Pilates/Yoga Instructor) is a Pilates and Yoga Instructor with a background in Dance. She certified in Pilates in her home country of Chile and started her teacher training for yoga after living in India for one year. Karla then moved to Australia to enhance her knowledge of Pilates and Yoga.She is passionate about delivering the foundations of Pilates and the flow of Yoga. Her philosophy: Pilates connects the body, Yoga connects the spirit and meditation keeps the communication with the Creator.
Carolyn Cesta (Pilates Instructor) is a Stockholm loving Canadian who took her first Pilates class 8 years ago and never looked back. Practicing Pilates has made her feel stronger and more balanced in everyday life - while cycling around town, while doing her favourite outdoor activities including cross-country skiing, and even while sitting at a desk for 8 hours a day as a doctoral student at the Karolinska Institute. As a newly certified BASI Pilates Instructor, she is eager to help others gain from the benefits of Pilates and excited to join the team at the Pilates by Janessa studio.
Tim Kasper (Pilates Instructor) spent over 30 years globe trotting as a performer and student of movement an d theater. While traveling he simultaneously explored various therapeutic movementmodalities that promised to help balance the body, refine and enhance expression, andimprove access to the natural mechanism of the human body; basically searching or“technique”. One day, after living and working in NY for 10 years, he realized that he hadfinally found a satisfying and reliable approach to singing, acting and dancing. He was suddenly working with one intention for all three disciplines and his teaching became infused with a clearer point of view than he had ever had. The magic he was prescribed was Pilates. The seed was planted and thus began his fascination with the Core Principles of Joseph Pilates’ universal, practical, and anatomically sound Method. He has worked teaching groups and private clients, in NY and Stockholm and has never encountered a person who has not profoundly benefited from their experience with The Pilates Method.
